Every Dream Has a Cost: Ironheart Trailer Thoughts & Analysis

With just over a month to go until release, Marvel Television has at last released the first, and what likely could be the only, trailer for the "Ironheart" series, which will be premiering with three episodes on June 24 at 9 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time/6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and it's looking to be a crazy ride for Riri Williams, as she's looking to build off her exciting "internship" abroad that played out in 2022's "Black Panther Wakanda Forever."

Adapting The Comics

Based off of this one trailer alone, it appears as if that they are going to be adopting some key elements of Riri Williams' journey in the comics. In her set of stories, Riri's stepfather, as well as her best friend Natalie Washington (played in the "Ironheart" series by Lyric Ross). were killed right in front of Riri in a drive-by shooting. Shortly thereafter, she began developing a new AI program for herself by "scanning and compositing her brainwaves and memories," which ended up resulting in it taking on the form of an aged-up version of her dead best friend. From there, Riri and N.A.T.A.L.I.E. went on a wild ride together, as they fought the Ten Rings, dealt with the aftermath of the Underage Superhuman Welfare Act, and so much more.

"Ironheart" looks to be adapting, at least in part, the N.A.T.A.L.I.E. storyline, though it will be interesting to see if they follow the exact same lead-up to its creation, or if they will deviate. Either way, it looks to be a thrilling ride for Riri, as she looks to prove herself in an ever-changing world.

The Hood In Full Force

A slight deviation from Riri's comics journey is the fact that she is now going to be going up against Parker Robbins, aka The Hood. In the comics, Robbins was able to take advantage of the first superhero Civil War to build a massive criminal empire. Following that venture, he began turning to dark magic in order to fuel his ambitions to gain greater power and respect from the world around him. Surprisingly playing Robbins in "Ironheart" is Anthony Ramos, recently known as John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton in the musical Hamilton, as well as Noah Diaz in 2023's "Transformers Rise of the Beasts."

Not particular known for more villainous roles, Ramos is looking amazingly scary and awesome in "Ironheart" as Robbins, as he is trying to influence Riri, as she is pursuing her dreams of creating something iconic, as she puts it in the trailer. He's looking to cause some chaos in Riri's world, which executive producer Ryan Coogler seems to be teasing, when he says, in regards to Robbins, that "it really highlights what happens when that ambition goes unchecked. What kind of price do you pay?"

The journey of The Hood is about to be a very unique and emotionally-driven journey, that Riri Williams is going to be caught right in the middle of, and it's going to be exciting to see just what comes next, especially since it appears as if that the criminal empire part of Robbin's comic story will be realized, at least to a point, which will be exciting to see play out on-screen.

OPINION: Riri's Journey Is Just Beginning

Every dream has a cost.

This is a unique but not exactly the most surprising tagline for "Ironheart." After all, her big project in 2022's "Black Panther Wakanda Forever" almost came with a great cost: her life. Even with that, she is still steaming ahead, as emboldened and passionate as she ever has. She has a goal to create something iconic, and if she even has half of the drive that she has in the comics, she's going to see that goal through to the end, but at what cost?

Riri Williams is about to go on one exciting ride, that will blend comic storylines and new storytelling alike to create something uniquely special. This has been the series that I have been most looking forward to for years, and I'm excited that it's finally going to be coming out.

Riri was the very first character that I got to read source material for before their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. I still remember being up late at night reading the comic collection "Ironheart: Riri Williams," which is a collection of the first eleven issues of the 2016-2018 "Invincible Iron Man" comic series, and being in love with the story and Riri Williams as a character. I went on to read the first twelve issues of the 2018-2019 solo "Ironheart" comic series that were complied into the collection "Ironheart: Meant To Fly". This character is going to be something truly special in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I just have the feeling that, if enough people were to give the character a chance, they would find Riri to be extremely likeable and relatable, though only time will tell if that will happen or not. Thankfully, we only have just over a month to wait, until Marvel Television's "Ironheart" has its three-episode premiere on June 24.
