In just one week, the first Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct dedicated to a specific game will be taking place, as on April 17, 2025, Nintendo will showcase one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch 2, in Mario Kart World.
First revealed during the April 2, 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Mario Kart World is promising to be one of the most expansive games in the Mario Kart series, while also changing some fundamental aspects to how the game as a whole will operate on this new system.
While Nintendo has already showed off a great deal of Mario Kart World, including Free Roam, a revamped Grand Prix mode, and much more, with the Direct on April 17, there are still more secrets to discover, and there are even some elements that fans of the Mario Kart series are hoping that Nintendo will take the time to add.
Are you excited for Mario Kart World?

Achievement System In Free Roam

Though Nintendo has never had a console-wide achievements system, like PlayStation and Xbox do, they have had achievement systems for individual games, and it would appear as if that Mario Kart World may be the latest game to get such a feature.
Given the fact that this is the first-ever Mario Kart game with an open world element, this isn't entirely surprising. Other open world racing games, such as Forza Horizon 5, have such a system, so finally having it in the Mario Kart series will be something wonderful to at long last have.
Embracing The Weirdness

Although there are fifty confirmed characters as of the time of writing, there is always a chance that Nintendo will be adding more to the roster on April 17. With that comes a chance for them to fully embrace the weirdness that has been their choices for the Mario Kart World character roster.
After all, so far Nintendo has picked some very interesting and certainly unique character choices for thei game's lineup, including but not limited to: Peepa (from Super Mario 3D World), Pianta (from Super Mario Sunshine), Moo Moo (the cow from the Moo Moo Meadows track from Mario Kart Wii), Nabbit (primarily from the New Super Mario Bros. series of games), and many more.
Nintendo has the chance to fully embrace this vision for the roster of Mario Kart World, by going big on the wacky characters options. Next week will be the ultimate indication of whether or not they ultimately go down this road or not.
Story Mode

Story Mode has never been in a Mario Kart entry before, but with the new open world nature and with the game having varying environments, there could be room for a mode that has never been seen before in this series.
A Mario Kart World Story Mode could go in a million different directions, but one of the ways could be that it is the basis for unlocking certain characters. Perhaps they would handle this in a similar manner to the Nintendo Wii game Mario Super Sluggers. In that game's story mode, you could only unlock certain characters in certain areas on the map. For example, Wario could only be found and unlocked in Wario City, while the Kong family could only be found and unlocked in DK Jungle.
Mario Kart World could easily implement a similar system in a potiential story mode, which would a great deal of depth to what is looking to be an already expansive game. As for how the actual story mode would operate, is anyone's guess. There are countless examples of story modes that Nintendo could use as inspiration, or they could build something entirely new and original, or they may not be doing a story mode at all. Next week will be the true indicator as to whether or not this is something that they ultimately do.

We are just one week from the Mario Kart World Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct, which will surely bring us new and exciting details of what is already an excellent-looking new entry in the series. With much of the game still to be discovered, we will have to wait for next week's presentation to see all of the secrets and surprises that Nintendo has been keeping in their back pocket, for this very moment, so that they can shine on the big stage.
